Mud Maps HD for Apple iPad
Rather than spend $800 on another GPS unit I thought I would try $150 (when i got it) on the Mud Maps HD app for the iPad I already had.
They have made some changes to the app recently, including losing the VMS branding, but the end producted ended up about the same.
You get a normal GPS style map, the TOPO maps and a few others general road maps of most of Australia.
The TOPO maps are fairly standard for a TOPO map I think, it gives you a blue pointer to show you where you are.
Setting way points is a bit tricky. You seem to be able to only do one at a time.
But you can easily get to to make way point of where you currently are for reference later.
It also does GPS logging so you can trace where you have been, after uploading it to their web site.
I think the biggest thing for me was the mind set change. Its not a GPS device like you Navman or Gamin, that shows you how to get from A to B. It's more of a "this is where I am now" device, overlaid on a TOPO map, so you can follow the tracks yourself.
With some basic GPS navigation thrown in as an after thought.
Personally I found it a little disappointing for the price, but its OK for off road stuff.
I've kept my navman for on road.
One other side note for those with kids.
If you have kids TV shows on your iPad for those long trips, remember only one of you can use it at a time.
You can either navigate the tracks or have the kids quite while they watch TV.
For me, she watches TV on the way there, then I take it to navigate.
I've been thinking of what other alternatives that may be to the normal GPS's. MudMap was one and the other is Memory Map.... Don't really know anything about them yet but if they can do similair things to what my current Garmin GPS, then I would be happy
Things that good to be able to do:
> Finding nearby places (Points of Interest)
> Tracklogging plus being able to Upload other peoples tracklogs plus download the tracklog to your pc
> Being able to zoom in w/o losing the resolution would be good
being able to update the maps w/o forking out big $$
Keep us up to date on how u find it <ii>
